Over the last 2 years, Tomkinson Group has been assisting with planning, project management, civil engineering and surveying associated with the redevelopment of Castlemaine’s Old Woollen Mill site.
The industrial site was formerly used as a mill, and then a carpet factory, and has now been reinvigorated as a food, arts and artisan manufacturing hub for Castlemaine.
Opposite Castlemaine’s botanical gardens, the Old Woollen Mill now includes a wide variety of activities and services, aimed at reinvigorating this area of Castlemaine for the benefits of locals, and as a major addition to Castlemaine’s already significant tourism industry. Coffee Basics is roasting there and have the amazing Das Kaffeehaus Cafe onsite. Food manufacturers include Icecream Social and St Cloud Cakes, and a variety of local manufacturers exhibiting and demonstrating their skills. It is also home to the Castlemaine Brewing Co., its taproom and Boomtown winery.
One of the main businesses onsite is the Castlemaine Vintage Bazzar, an excellent undercover vintage market, which is complimented well in the main factory by Platform No. 5 and various artists. A strength building studio is also on site along with various builders and craftspeople.
Now almost complete, the Woollen Mill has a handsome industrial aesthetic – exposed brick work finish and the stainless steel of the brewery, the mixture of building style and form retained. In addition, the rich history of the site is highlighted and incorporated through a visual progressive exhibition around and through the Mill, for the entertainment of visitors as they explore. More information about these and other businesses can be found on The Mill Castlemaine website (www.millcastlemaine.com.au)
