Environment & Sustainability Strategy, Moyne

Moyne Shire required a structured, evidence‑based approach that could balance environmental protection with the region’s strong agricultural and cultural identity. Community feedback highlighted consistent priorities: safeguarding green spaces, improving waste and recycling systems, addressing climate risks, and ensuring local benefits from renewable energy projects. These themes informed the direction and scope of the final strategy.

Tomkinson led the process, including an extensive review of more than two decades of council policies, environmental reports and planning documents. This work ensured the new strategy built on past achievements, addressed legacy gaps and aligned with current legislative and policy requirements.

We also supported the integration of council’s broad community engagement findings—from surveys and listening posts to workshops and stakeholder sessions—ensuring the strategy accurately reflected community values and priorities.

A clear structure was developed around four key focus areas identified by council:

• Empowering and partnering with the community
• Protecting biodiversity and natural assets
• Acting on climate change
• Improving waste reduction and circular resource recovery

The final strategy provides a practical and measurable framework that strengthens council’s capacity to protect the natural environment, support climate resilience, and improve resource efficiency.

The strategy equips council with a forward‑looking, actionable plan that supports a sustainable and resilient future for the Moyne Shire community.
