The Bendigo Airport Redevelopment Project is one of the City of Greater Bendigo’s most important current projects, with Council’s vision for a regional centre for aviation excellence and a vibrant business park at the airport site. The project includes the construction of a new runway, an increase in hangar development, and construction of a contemporary business park. The construction of a new 1600 meter runway will cater for larger aircraft such as the SAAB 340 (36 passengers), which will complement the existing shorter runway. This project is expected to enhance regional business development and attraction, enabling better air links and providing easier access for emergency and medical aircraft.

To capitalise on this development opportunity, the City of Greater Bendigo awarded the consultation, concept design and detail design of the Bendigo Airport Business Development to Tomkinson Group in 2011.

Consultation sessions with key stakeholders including user groups, airport consultants, authorities and Council .

Tomkinson Group then developed a Business Park concept layout that delivered an additional 70 Code A (small planes) hangars, 7 airside/roadside sites, and16 landside business sites available for long term lease from Council.

Tomkinson Group completed the full detail engineering design for the airport redevelopment in 2012. The design has been challenging, including meeting the airside CASA requirements and onsite drainage concerns such as multiple retarding basins.

Since completing the full detailed design Tomkinson Group has undertaken an intermediate Stage 1A design. This enabled the partial construction of 3 code A taxi lanes, making new hangar lease sites available at the airport.

Recently Tomkinson Group was engaged to undertake the engineering component of a Whole Water Cycle Management at the airport redevelopment. Council pursued this initiative with the baking of the state government. Tomkinson group liaised with SPELl to design a floating wetland system which treated the runoff from a neighbouring industrial development, undertaking the associated MUSIC modelling and drainage designs.

Tomkinson Group looks forward to continuing to assist Council with the successful delivery of the airport redevelopment project and playing a key role in delivering a great asset for the Bendigo community.
